Final Examination

  1. The final examination is on the topics in the student’s thesis. In addition to theoretical and experimental content directly related to the thesis, the examination will also reflect the student’s understanding and expertise regarding general scientific subjects related to the thesis topic. The final examination will be held within 30 days after submission of the thesis.
  2. Students should be examined two years after, or within four years after (subject to approval from the Teaching Committee), the beginning of their MSc studies (see the regulations below titled “Term of Study,” and also the note at the end of the section titled “Thesis” above). The examination is held verbally, and can take the form of a seminar attended by the examiners (supervisors and referees). Every instructor in the teaching program is entitled to be present at the examination.
  3. The examiners at the final examination will be the supervisor(s) and the referees who evaluated the thesis, as described in the “Thesis” section above, paragraph 7. The head of the teaching program, or a deputy, will serve as chair of the examination, and sign the examination form at the end. The examination chair cannot be one of the supervisors or referees.
  4. At the end of the examination, the examiners will submit their grade for the thesis to the examination chair, confidentially. The final examination grade will be calculated based on the grade given by the supervisor(s) (50%) and the grade given by the referees (50%). If there is a difference of ten points or more between the supervisor grade and the referee grade, the examination chair will convene a discussion without the student present, to find a way of balancing out the examination grade. In cases in which the difference in grades remains even after this discussion, the examination chair may deliver his/her own grade for the final examination, in order to balance out the overall grade. In such cases, the final examination grade will be calculated based on the grade given by the supervisor(s) (one-third), the grade given by the referees (one-third), and the grade given by the examination chair (one-third). At the end of the examination, the examination chair will announce the results (grades) of the review of the thesis and the final examination in the presence of the student and the examiners.
  5. After the examination, the student will amend his/her thesis in accordance with the referees’ comments and after consultation with their supervisor(s). The student will send the approval of their thesis from their supervisor(s) to the teaching program secretariat, and upload a PDF version of the thesis to the dedicated library site (please ensure that the author’s identity number does NOT appear in this file): https://tss.ekmd.huji.ac.il/Pages/default.aspx.
  6. After submission of the thesis, the teaching program secretariat will pass on the thesis grade and the final examination grade to the Teaching Secretariat. Submission of the thesis will be completed such that these grades are passed to the Teaching Secretariat by March 31 at the very latest. Failure to meet this schedule will require the student to register for studies and pay tuition for the “Thesis” course, 71100.
