Final Grade
When notification is received that the student has completed his/her degree studies (as per section 5 above), the Teaching Secretariat will check the eligibility for a degree and calculate the final grade. After receiving confirmation of eligibility for a degree, students will not be able to amend their final grade and/or change their degree diploma. See also the University Teaching Policy and Procedures, section 14.4, “Finality of Final Grades and Degree Certificates” (https://studentsadmin.huji.ac.il/sites/default/files/minhalt/files/takanon2023english.pdf).
Calculation of the Final Grade
The final grade for a MSc degree is determined based on the following components: thesis, final examination, course grade average.
The final grade for students who have fulfilled their requirements is calculated as follows:
- Thesis grade: 30% of the final grade (40% for those who began their studies before the second semester of 2020–2021)
- Final examination grade: 30% of the final grade (20% for those who began their studies before the second semester of 2020–2021)
- Combined average course grade: 40% of the final grade.
Classification of the Final Grade on the Degree Diploma
Classification is determined according to the student’s relative ranking among graduating students in his/her year cohort (on condition that the grade is not lower than the threshold set for each level), as follows:
Classification | Percentages | Grade Threshold
Undergraduate | Graduate | Undergraduate | Graduate
Summa cum laude | Highest 2% | Highest 3% | 90 | 92 |
Cum laude | Next 18% | Next 22% | 85 | 85 |
Degree Ceremony
Degree diplomas will be awarded to eligible students at a ceremony held once a year, around the end of the academic year. In most cases, eligible students are awarded their diplomas at the ceremony held the year after they completed their studies. At the ceremony, students receive their diplomas and a certificate in Hebrew confirming completion of their studies and listing their grades.
Requests to assess degree eligibility must be received at least 6 weeks before the ceremony. Requests received after this time will be handled only after the ceremony. Notification of the date of the ceremony will be sent individually to eligible students. If notification has not been received by April 30 in the year when the ceremony is to be held, students should contact the Teaching Secretariat: 08-948-9189.
