Thesis Defense

  1. The thesis defense will focus on the topics of the thesis. Apart from the theoretical and experimental content directly pertaining to the thesis, the defense will also reflect the student's understanding and familiarity with general scientific topics related to the thesis.
  2. Students must defend their thesis within 4 years of the commencement of the master's studies (also see comment at the end of section 40.1.2.6). The defense is an oral examination, and can take the form of a seminar in the presence of the thesis committee. Any teacher of the teaching program may be present at the defense.
  3. The thesis committee will comprise of the supervisors and the referees who evaluated the thesis. The head of the teaching program will serve as the chairperson of the defense and assign the grade for the oral defense.
  4. At the end of the defense, the chairperson will discreetly receive the grades from the members of the committee. The chairperson will weigh the grades as described in section 10 in 40.1.2.6, and will sum up the evaluation in the presence of the student and the committee.
  5. An "excellent" grade – 95 or higher – on either thesis or defense will be given only with the approval of the entire committee and will include a written justification for the grade. Unless the grade given by each member of the committee is 95 or higher, the overall grade will be 94 at most.
  6. Following the defense, the student will correct the thesis according to the comments of the committee under the guidance of the supervisor, and will upload the thesis as a PDF document to a dedicated website at this link: https://tss.ekmd.huji.ac.il/Pages/default.aspx .
In order to upload a file, an account for public computers is required. Students without an account on public computers can open an account at this link: https://pm.cc.huji.ac.il/pwm/public/landing.jsp
Before uploading, please note that your ID number does not appear in the file. Corrections must be handed in in time for the final grade to be submitted to the secretariat no later than 31.3. Any deviation from this timetable will necessitate enrollment and tuition for "Thesis".
  7. The grades – signed by the members of the thesis committee – will be transferred to the secretariat by the head of the teaching program, with the 2 printed copies and the final digital copy of the approved thesis. The digital copy will be accompanied by a filled out depositing form, signed by the student and supervisors. The copies will be transferred by the secretariat to the Faculty library and to the National Library of Israel.
